What To Do If You Are Injured In An Auto Accident

1. Seek medical treatment immediately; follow all doctors' orders and recommendations for treatment. Do not wait several months after the accident to see a physician for pain or injuries you receive from the accident.
2. Tell the medical providers what injuries were sustained in the accident and about any pre-existing conditions you may have. If you have medical insurance, use it to pay your bills if the medical provider will accept it. We will assist you in the reimbursement process if you recover money from the insurance company. If you have the Medical Card or Medicare, do not use it to pay your accident related bills unless absolutely necessary. Medicaid/Medicare reimbursement is a tedious process and can delay the payment of any recovery to you.
3. Keep copies of all medical bills you receive.
4. Keep track of any days you miss from work or school due to the accident. Tell your employer or school personnel that you are missing work due to the injuries sustained in your accident and ask them to document that in your file.
5. Request a copy of the accident report from the law enforcement agency which responded to your accident - Police, Sheriff or Highway Patrol.
6. Unless they are regarding damage to your vehicle or property ONLY, do not sign any papers- releases, medical authorizations, etc. from the insurance company without discussing them with an attorney. Also do not accept any money from the insurance company unless it is specifically for your vehicle or property damage.
7. Request a copy of your own auto insurance policy from your insurance company, including the declarations page. You may have medical payments coverage or other coverage to assist you with your claim.
8. Keep a diary or log of how your life has been affected by the accident. Document changes in personal activities, hobbies, lifestyle, etc. for future reference.
9. Take photos of your vehicle and your injuries and/or scarring from the accident.
